Today is the fifth anniversary for the blog. When it started 1,827 posts ago the direction was unclear and with this post once again the direction is a bit of a mystery. Trying to post daily has proven difficult when a fresh topic idea isn’t forthcoming, for that reason the plan is to only post when there is something relevant or fun to say. That might be a reminder of a particular day to celebrate a drink or beverage of a discourse on how ignorant a politician is on the topic of alcohol or firearms. The goal will be for topics to concentrate on firearms and fermentation only occasionally coloring outside the lines. Thank you to everyone who receive the blog via email and to those who visit regularly to read what we have to say.

Cheers to you all!

On February 12 the blog will turn five. We generate about 1,000 new views per month and 135 people following our mindless banter. Every comment is considered and we appreciate you taking the time to read about whatever happens to come to mind that day. We may decide to post less frequent and with more focus after the 12th because some days it is difficult to find an interesting topic while other days it is difficult to stop typing. So if you start to see less posts do not become alarmed, we’ll post when we have something to say as opposed to saying something daily.

Sake – Not Everyone’s Cup Of Tea

06 Thursday Aug 2015

Last night we had someone out with our group and thought they might appreciate Sake so we took them to a restaurant which makes their own. Readers may recall I penned a note about the place back in 2014. As it turns out the person was not quite as adventuresome as we thought and just didn’t seem to enjoy the Sake varieties offered. I believe I learned a valuable lesson, while most people I meet have an open mind about such things, some just like what they like and really don’t want to stray off the beaten path. If I had to do it over again I’d probably choose another restaurant or ask more questions before suggesting they try a Sake sampler. They did like one of the three, but it was obvious it would not be their first choice of beverage. On the bright side they did seem to like the meal, but I don’t like to see barely touched glasses of Sake going to waste. At least the experience was a lesson learned!

Lenny Boy Kombucha Lost Rose

Saving the best for last I opened Lenny Boy Lost Rose and this one had the type of tart nature I prefer. Perhaps it was the rose petals and lemongrass, or just being left with the scoby longer, but this one was tasty. I need to visit Lenny Boy and see if their buch is all low level tart or if I just happened to get batches which were more pedestrian in nature. If you haven’t tried Kombucha before you might start with Elite Beet and then try Lost Rose to see where your preference lies. The next step for me is probably trying to make it at home.

Lenny Boy Kombucha Mint Condition

I must admit I am not a big fan of mint. So I purchased a bottle of Lenny Boy Kombucha Mint Condition knowing it probably was not going to be my cup of tea (pun intended). The concoction has both spearmint and peppermint and in truth if it wasn’t reported to be good for me I would have probably used it as drain cleaner. It was certainly a personal preference, but I almost despised it. If you are a mint fan then by all means give it a whirl, I know as far as I am concerned that was my first and last bottle of Mint Condition!

Lenny Boy Kombucha Strawberry

04 Thursday Jun 2015

Yet another Lenny Boy Kombucha, this time the flavor was Strawberry and once again I found the flavor underwhelming. I actually could find no discernible strawberry character in the buch and the tart characteristics were very light as well. I was in a store and checked out the pricing and at over $3.50 per bottle I’m not digging the lack of flavor I am finding in the majority of their products. I doubt it is freshness since these were purchased cold and kept refrigerated and tart aroma and flavors don’t lessen over time. I may have to try making some to see if my own concoctions would be this weak or if they would have a more pronounced flavor and aroma.
