Apparently China has a huge thirst for imported wines and that got me wondering if we should be bracing for a price increase or shortage as the country begins to snag wines across the globe. I know if I was a winery barely making it in the US I would start shipping it to China and test that market. With 20% of the world’s population it could consume a staggering volume of wine. Currently we supply slightly over 5% of imported wine to China, but if their consumption grows by 60% by 2018 and we only maintain 5% we might see enough wines traveling out of the country to impact the price. Wine seems to no longer be the beverage of choice being replaced by beer, so this may provide an outlet for wineries who may have lost traction in the market.
