Yesterday we flew into Grand Rapids, Michigan a couple of days prior to the American Homebrewers Association National Homebrewers Conference. We had no real plan for the very first day so we started with HopCat in Grand Rapids. The beer was excellent and the menu was just what the doctor ordered. If nothing else the Johnny Cash photo in the men’s bathroom was priceless.
After an invigorating afternoon spent at the bar we trekked onward toward Brewery Vivant for the Rare Beer & Food Experience. This was a phenomenal food and beer pairing followed by a tasting of all the beers Brewery Vivant had to offer. Let’s at least run down the courses.
Station 1:
Escoffier Brett Ale 9.25% ABV with Cheese & Charcuterie.
Station 2:
Zaison Imperial Saison 9% ABV with Smokehouse. Dry Rubbed Ribs, Chicken Wings, Beer Brisket, and Portobello Mushroom Cap.
Station 3:
North French Biere de Garde, 6% ABV with four tartines. Pickled Golden Beet, Smoked Salmon, BLT, and Mushroom Duxelle.
Station 4:
Paris Wood Aged 9% ABV with Braised Rhubard Crepes and Blackberry Mousse Cones.
A truly awesome meal followed by a stop at a local ice cream shop. Stay tuned for more adventures as we take a bus tour on Wednesday and Thursday the conference begins.
