Back in August I posted You Have a Responsibility which explained if you have firearms in the house you have a responsibility to keep them out of the hands of children. Last night 20/20 did a report on children with guns and set up scenarios with hidden cameras. In all honesty I have not yet watched the show, it is on the DVR. The teasers for the show they published during the week showed kids going into homes and opening drawers. I know kids are curious little beasts, but had I went into someone’s home and pilfered through their drawers my butt would have not been able to sit in a chair for a month. Who raises their kids to go into a home and open drawers or remove items?
I think the gun owner has a responsibility to secure firearms, but I think parents need to teach kids the boundaries and how to behave. IMO it’s much better to remove the mystique of firearms than to simply say “don’t touch.” A curious kid will want to do what is forbidden until they find out there are consequences for breaking the rules. It is your responsibility as a parent to keep your children safe so go a bit further than just saying no. Education is the key!
**If you don’t know how to teach your young children what to do when they encounter firearms start with the Eddie Eagle program. Anyone can teach the program and the ideal age is Pre-K through third grade. The program does not promote firearms and firearm ownership, rather what the child should do if they encounter an unattended firearm.**
