I guess the editorial staff of NC newspapers have opened their doors to everyone or else they have run out of intelligent things to say. I came across this “guest commentary” from an Asheville paper entitled Rights Being Trumped By A Vocal Minority by Karen Boekschoten. There’s quite a bit that could be commented on in this piece, but I’m only going to focus on one of Karen’s “facts.”
More than one-third of public shootings occur where carrying firearms is not banned.
So hold on a second. If one-third happen in an area where firearms are allowed, a full on two-thirds occur where firearms are not allowed. That tells me I am more likely to be involved in a shooting where guns are not allowed in the first place. So anytime I go into an area where guns are banned and gunbuster signs are posted I am at greater risk of violence from some criminal.
I read the piece and parts brought to mind some fun-loving person with her toddler children who lives in the mountains and only wants everyone to get along. Of course I should have known better. Our girl KB joined social media to organize for gun control. Well, truth be told, not just gun control, but that is her focus. She also is a strong advocate of the movie Gasland which is a piece of garbage I refuse to link and I detailed why in a previous blog post. I feel sorry for people who blindly follow what they hear on TV or read in the media and do not take the time to check the validity of the information.
I said I was not going to pick apart the op-ed piece, but another snippet just caught my eye and is worthy of comment.
Armed citizens have not been able to stop mass shootings
Perhaps KB didn’t hear about the Clackamas Mall incident. I guess she discounts his actions which saved many, although two were murdered by the criminal before citizen intervention. Perhaps she missed the incident earlier in December in Franklin County where they criminal said he was going to shoot everyone before the CHP holder trained the muzzle on him. How about the person in Goldsboro who stopped a robber from shooting a store clerk?
I worry about news agencies which allow or produce articles not based in fact. Lara Logan took one on the chin after a botched report for 60 Minutes. They stood tall and apologized. I wonder why other news organizations such as the paper with Sunday’s editorial and the one which published this non-factual article by a gun control fanatic are left to stand without penalty. I guess because they don’t hold themselves to the standards of fact before fiction. Or maybe because the truth doesn’t sell.
