At the end of the December issue of Guns & Ammo the editor chimed in with his thoughts on the 2nd Amendment. It was an opinion piece and we all know opinions are like poop shoots, everybody has one. It was his side of the story and he is/was entitled to his views. Now as soon as it published subscribers started calling foul. I’ll bottom line it for you, Dick Metcalf is no longer with Guns & Ammo as a result of his column.
My thought when I read the article the first time was I don’t quite agree. Then I read it again and my thought was I don’t quite agree. I didn’t get all wild and start stomping around the house and called G&A and asking for him to be fired. It’s simply words on a page and as an opinion piece it was his opinion. Now I really don’t think this should have been published in the first place. It is one thing to have an opinion and quite another to publish that opinion, especially in a firearms magazine. Now have we cancelled our subscription, no, again it is just words on a page. Should G&A carefully consider what they publish, even opinion pieces? Oh heck yes. If Metcalf wants to blog his heart out or go on TV discussing his views then have at it, but within the confines of G&A he needed to keep his opinion on the matter to himself. I’m not sure that warranted him being fired, perhaps there were other reasons he got a pink slip, but I do know quite a few folks were upset by the article.
