Yesterday was International Stout Day, but it was also our annual stout tasting. We could never quite remember when we started having this annual event, but it has been over 10 years and maybe closer to 13. This year we had 29 beers if I kept track correctly with nine of us doing the tasting. The person who keep track every year was absent and so there was some dissension in the final rankings, but when it all came down the top three were:

  1. Great Divide Oatmeal Yeti
  2. Dieu De Ciel Aphrodite
  3. New Holland Dragon’s Milk

We had several right there in contention, but eight out of nine voted for Oatmeal Yeti number one and the other had Oatmeal Yeti as their second choice. It was a little disappointing we did not have any huge standouts based on the lineup this year. Only a couple of the beers were stinkers and a couple we just couldn’t classify as a stout. If Tart of Darkness from The Bruery had more in common with a stout this wonderfully sour beast would have been right up there in contention. It was probably the favorite beer of the night. The newest Ommegang Game of Thrones beer, Take The Black, was more of a dark saison than a stout so it fell by the wayside as well. I do look forward to enjoying the beer when GoT returns in the spring. One we could not appreciate was the Wynkoop Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout. Just not a fan of bull testicles in my beer. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t awesome either. Balls!
