This week a sad story unfolded in the nation’s capital when a woman tried to ram a barricade at The White House. Shots were fired and the woman was killed. The incident took much longer than what I just described, but that is the jest of it. One news agency reported the woman was shooting and that was simply not true. I didn’t hear anyone suggest she had an assault rifle, but she must have, correct? Every crime is committed with an evil black rifle, correct?
No, in this case the woman was most likely schizophrenic and was not taking her medication. She did not have a firearm and her only weapon was her vehicle. At first my reaction was why did the police shoot her, but upon reflection they really did not have much choice. She had almost ran over several officers at the barricade and it is not clear to me if they fired any shots or not. Later she was definitely shot and killed when the car hit a median. The car in this case was a deadly weapon and the police could not know if she had an explosive device in the car, was armed, or if she was just a woman who was off her meds. It makes me sad to think a young woman with a child was killed because she was delusional and acted on those impulses. We need to make sure we don’t stigmatize those with mental illness, but we also need to ensure these people are treated so they don’t hurt themselves or others.
One thing is for certain, no civilian fired any shots in this sad scenario and no AR-15 was present. If you thought a rifle may have been used or even a handgun, shame on you for buying into the media hype. It’s easy to be the sheep, strive to be the shepherd!
