Anyone who follows the blog knows I like the occasional Bourbon and ginger. Well, the problem is most of the ginger ale is so boring it just doesn’t do much to liven up the drink. Truthfully I add way more ginger than you would get a bar, but it’s my drink and when I mix it I’ll make it any way I desire. So over the last few months I have been trying darn near every ginger I could get my hands on. What I have found thus far is Canada Dry, Schweppes, and Seagram’s are just downright boring. They are made for the masses and just don’t cut it. I have found if that is what I want then Lowes Foods Pizzazz Ginger Ale is inexpensive and perfect. At $2.50 for twelve 12 ounce cans how can you beat it. I think I once found it on sale for two beans. One of the better, though not outstanding, ginger ales is Fever Tree. It comes in 6.8 ounce bottles, but a four pack will set you back $6-7. That is some pricey ginger. They also have a Ginger Beer which I am told is spicier and I have some to try, but I’ve already found what I like so I doubt I will look back unless it is outstanding.
Speaking of Ginger Beer I tried several of those. I could not have been more underwhelmed by Barritts and by Reed’s. I really thought those might scratch the itch, but they are a little too sweet and a little less spicy than what I was after. I spotted something called Q Ginger Ale the other day and bought a very expensive four pack to give it a whirl. I think the bottles were 8 ounce, but the price of admission was over $7.
So fast forward to what I prefer. It actually is out of South Carolina and they are known for their extremely spicy versions of ginger. I was in SC and so I picked up a six-pack of 12 ounce bottles. The price was something like $7 for the gold cap Blenheim which is not as hot and turned out to be exactly what I was after. Not bland and with an excellent ginger spice, but not so hot as to burn my mouth. Note to self, pick up more the next time you see it.
Now I gotta drink up all the wanna be ginger I have cluttering up the fridge. Life is tough and cruel sometimes. 😉
