Last night to celebrate a special occasion we went to a local empanada and tequila bar. The food was excellent, but our margaritas were a bit less than perfect. The standard margarita was too tart (taste those limes people) and the grapefruit margarita was a bit on the watery side and lacked depth. While both had promise, neither was phenomenal. Now at the end of the evening I selected a Casta Gusano Extra Anejo to savor after the desert pumpkin empanada. The tequila came in a small sniffer and with a palate cleanser of homemade bloody mary and lime. Note to self: next time be sure to order the bloody mary. The tequila was smoky, smooth and delicious. I did not immediately recognize the name so imagine my surprise when I realized it was the worm bottle you see in the liquor store and think is a gimmick. No gimmick here, this is the real deal. So next time I spot this in the store it might have to follow me home. If nothing else at least now I know a place where I can enjoy it on occasion.
