I’ve kept the posts so far this year benign, but this morning I saw a video which reminds me of the ignorance we face from some of our elected officials. The news media continues to put forth that magazine restrictions are the keys to solving gun violence. I just cannot compute why that would ever be the case. Outside of homicidal mass murderers or gang violence/organized crime the average criminal with a gun is not shooting magazines with larger capacities than what was originally supplied with the firearm. So why the emphasis on banning magazines?
Personally I think that magazines larger than supplied with the firearm are kinda stupid, but that doesn’t mean I believe they should be banned. There are many stupid things in today’s society and because we are Americans we are and should be allowed to exercise the freedom to choose. Back on topic, in the Aurora shooting it has been widely published that the murderer began his carnage with a shotgun and then turned to a rifle and because he was using a non-stock magazine it jammed before he could fire 30 rounds and he discarded the firearm. As a result of that an other incidents some elected officials are trying to ban semi-automatic rifles which have a cosmetic appearance similar to that of military weapons. That to me is almost as idiotic as judging someone because of their physical appearance. In the not too distant past we did this in America and called it segregation. Why don’t you and yours head to the back of the bus or upstairs in the theater because we are somehow stupidly scared of an appearance. Ok, I went off the rails there for a minute this morning, but I hope you get the point of why legislation based on cosmetic appearance or features is stupid, backward thinking. Senator Feinstein, said military-style firearms have been involved in 350 deaths in the past 10 years. (I’m not sure where she found that statistic, but I am glad to use it to demonstrate a point.) Put that into perspective, 35 deaths per year, 50 states (I’ll include DC in the 50 number for ease of calculations), so 0.7 deaths per state. One single death in each state every 17.4 months/521 days. In the US in 2011 we had 32,367 deaths by motor vehicle or 1.8 per state per day and this was the smallest number of deaths since 1949. So cars kill almost 2 people every single day in any given state and semi-automatic firearms with a cosmetic appearance are supposedly the root cause of 0.0019 deaths per day. You are 947 times more likely to be killed in or by a car than by one of the firearms legislators are trying to ban.
Magazine restrictions are almost as stupid and lacking in thought, real, intelligent thought. Many would have you believe restricting magazine capacity would stop violent criminals and allow citizens to charge the attacker during reloading. That simply is not the case. The time required for an experienced person to reload is short so even if magazines were not available in larger capacity one could carry multiple magazines. Please take the time to watch the video below. It is about 14 minutes and is a little choppy near the end, but demonstrates well why a magazine ban will accomplish nothing in the end. Keep your eye on Christy, she to me seems more like the average citizen with firearm training.
One final note, generally when I have someone come to the blog and post a rebuttal they hit and run. Unless their comments use offensive language I do not edit them and allow them to stand. If you want to start a discussion, please read my entire post and if I have posted a video, watch the video without interruption from start to finish and then we can begin to have an intelligent discussion.
