Last night while out for dinner it turned out wines on the menu were half price. Looking down the list we noted some old favorites and several we were not familiar with. Since the restaurant was Italian a red seemed to be the right choice so we settled on one our server had not tasted and the bartender was not familiar with either. It was a 2009 The Feast from Cultivate Wines which is a blend of 66% Merlot, 34% Cabernet and it turned out to be a nice choice. Not offensive, pleasant, peppery with a spice and a dark fruit flavor. Now at the full on price point of $50 I might look for something more complex, but at the $25 price point in a restaurant it was an excellent choice for red sauce and meat dishes.
Upon reflection we often seem to enjoy a blend, especially in red wine. I’ve read online that blends can create complexity of flavor which may not be present in a wine made with only one varietal. At any rate, I think when I’m facing a daunting wine list and a lack of information I may default to a blend to save the day.
