People who know I am a firearms instructor are asking me questions now surrounding the proposal to limit the capacity of magazines and to potentially ban certain firearms based on cosmetic features. I can offer my opinion, but in reality I just don’t know. The politicians say they will push to make restrictions happen. The gun rights groups say it will not happen, no way, no how.
The reality of it is limiting magazine capacity to an arbitrary number invented from thin air is not going to do anything but restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. Why is a criminal able to commit a crime and the citizens turn out to be the ones who have to pay the price for that crime. There are magazines I can see no useful purpose in having other than for fun at the shooting range, and I would not be sad if they were not available since I wasn’t planning to purchase one anyway, but if you are going to take away my right and access to them only because some crazed lunatic used them for a nefarious purpose then I don’t see that as intelligent thought. Most AR-15 rifles comes standard with 30 round magazines, trying to find anything less is difficult and let’s say those magazines are outlawed or banned, where are all the magazines for replacement. I just don’t see arbitrary magazine restrictions to be a solution. I hear people say, “Well, it is something and something must be done.” I agree it is something, just not something useful.
One thing is for sure we are going to have some interesting days ahead. For those who would like to see the US disarmed I’m pretty sure they will be disappointed. For those who don’t want to see anything happen at all, I’m pretty sure they will be disappointed as well. What’s going to happen? I just don’t know. I’m just hopeful whatever happens is meaningful and does not cause me to be the one to pay for crimes of others. If it is not meaningful then it should never have been enacted in the first place.
