Here’s one for the learn something new everyday file. Yesterday on a forum there was a discussion on new shooters and shotguns. In the course of the discussion one of the participants pointed out most shotguns do not have firing pin blocks or safeties like many rifles and handguns. What this means is the vast majority of the time the shotgun should not have a round in the chamber to prevent accidental discharge if the firearm is dropped.
Now if your shotgun is the primary firearm for home protection, then my opinion is you should find a way to have it ready where it would not fall or be dropped and it would be fine to have a round in the chamber. The only issue with the dropping is the potential for the gun to go off if the firing pin hit the primer on the shell casing and to be honest I have not heard of this occurring, but it certainly could happen. Just be aware and keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times.
