I’m giving the BJCP Exam to a group of examinees this morning. Should be interesting to see how the new six beer format works for everyone. The entrance exam proved to be too difficult for one person in the group who was not a homebrewer and after many attempts they have had to bow out. I’m sure everyone believes the move to an electronic entrance exam format has made it easier, but that simply isn’t the case. With the old exam the failure rate was about 15-20% and I would guess a similar percentage do not pass the entrance exam.
The taste exam is now 90 minutes with beers coming out at 15 minute intervals. Generally I have had difficulty getting beers for the exam, but this time all six are homebrews and any doctoring to make or miss style will be minimal. If you are one of the lucky people taking the exam today, good luck, if you are someone waiting to take the exam elsewhere, be sure to prepare. The best preparation IMO is to pen score sheets for a myriad of beers to get accustomed to writing your thoughts in a quick manner and to do it for almost every beer you have for a few months. By the time the exam rolls around if you follow that training regime you’ll be all set.
