For those who caught the short-lived TV show Brew Masters on Discovery you should be familiar with Bitches Brew. For those who missed it, the beer was a created to honor the 40th Anniversary of the release of the Miles Davis classic album. It first saw the light of day in June of 2010 at SAVOR in DC and when you boil it down the beer is an Imperial Stout with honey. Of course there is more to the story than that, but I prefer the KISS principle of things.
Bottles have been appearing lately in the bottle shops so the other night it was on the draft list and my two companions ordered the brew and liked it so I figured when in Rome. My first thought was this thing is really, really dry. Generally I find DFH brews to be slightly sweet and often less attenuated than I would prefer. This was completely opposite to that. It would pair well with a chocolate dessert. For me it was a bit too dry. I found myself not enjoying the aftertaste and needed to grab the water-glass to wet my palate. For me it just didn’t quite work out, but one of my companions decided to order another so it must have been his cup-o-tea. If you spot it on draft at a decent price give it a whirl, but I’d suspect a bottle might run you $15+ and 25 ounces would be a bit more than I would want to consume at one time so grab a friend if you feel this one is a must have.
