Over the past two days I enjoyed the Ovila Dubbel and the Ovila Quad from Sierra Nevada. Back in July I cracked open the Ovila Saison and was impressed at how well the beer was crafted. On the other hand the Dubbel lacked depth and complexity. It was rather one-dimensional and while tasty, was not all it could have been. I remember having it on draft and thinking it might benefit with a bit of age which is why I let it rest in the fridge so long. Age really did not build complexity and it was essentially the same beer I had on draft and didn’t find mindblowing when it was first released. The Quad was a very tasty beverage and had some complexity, but it paled in comparison to some of the other Quads coming out in the US and imported from Belgium.
I noticed on the Ovila website they are coming out with a Barrel-aged Quad, but I believe I will pass unless I run into it on draft somewhere. In fact I probably will pass unless I happen upon a lonely bottle of that Saison sitting on the shelf waiting for me to come and dispose of it properly.
