There is a particular person on a forum I frequent who seems to be a bit elitist in their attitude toward instructors. Best I can tell the thought process of this individual is if you aren’t or don’t have the following you aren’t qualified to instruct:
- Military service – if you did not serve the country you aren’t qualified to instruct. What a bunch of malarkey! Sure you may not have made a profession out of carrying a firearm, but there are tons of military based positions where firearms are not the primary responsibility. My hat goes off to all veterans no matter what their role or branch of service. They keep us safe on a daily basis and without them I would not be able to enjoy the freedoms I currently have, but to imply someone should not be an instructor without that background is ludicrous.
- Website – this person has made it clear they feel a professional website is a sign of a professional class. What? Anyone can put up a website, all they need is web development experience or someone with that experience. A website indicates nothing about the level of training one will receive, only that the person can create or pay someone to create a site.
- Training Counselor – if it wasn’t X then you shouldn’t instruct Y or somehow your training was substandard. The blinders must be on with this one. I’ve had multiple NRA instructors and multiple NRA Training Counselors and IMO you should take classes from a myriad of instructors to be a well-rounded instructor. I learned long ago that everyone can teach you something. You may look at that guy digging a ditch as someone with nothing to offer, but if you took the time to speak with them you might learn something which would serve you should you ever need to dig a ditch, move earth or lay in a drainage line.
- Bigger is better – this person seems to have the philosophy bigger is better and I can do it better than you can do it. I try to avoid pissing contests since generally you don’t escape without getting urine on yourself at some point. The mine is better than yours philosophy should really end after grade school.
Anyway, I don’t know why this person feels the need to have the last word on certain topics. They are generally well-respected on the forum and often their posts when not trying to degrade the experience or qualifications of others is on target (pun intended).
PS: If you feel the above post was directed at you, perhaps it was. 😉
