Last week I happened to find an ammo deal on a local forum and jumped to order. Luckily my order was placed in time since a few days later all the stock was gone and the deal was dead. That got me to thinking if you see a deal on ammo you better jump on it.
So what exactly is a deal? Let’s say it’s some reloaded ammo from who knows where, then I would suggest you look for reviews on the web for the ammo. If it “shoots dirty” then you will at least be aware the gun will require cleaning. Now I would also caution the deal ammo might just be for target practice or time at the range and not for home defense or competition. I’ve not had a misfire with any name brand centerfire ammo, but have heard some is not so stellar. My initial suggestion is to look for name brands. In centerfire .380 and 9mm CCI Blazer and UMC Remington have not failed me yet. From my experience I would assume other calibers would be fine as well although some do report issues with the Remington ammo. On the other hand my box of 22 caliber Remington Golden Bullet was a steal at $16 per 525 rounds, but I’ve already had two misfires and have not yet shot half the box.
Last year on Black Friday Dick’s Sporting Goods had a buy one at full price get one at half price sale. The best deals going were on aluminum cased Blazer ammo. The before tax price per box was .380 $11.24 , 9mm $8.24, and 38 special lead round nose $11.99. I use those prices as my litmus test for a deal. Anytime I see name brand aluminum or brass cased 9mm for less than 10 beans I believe it is a deal. My latest deal was 600 rounds of Blazer Brass for $8.74 delivered. For the math whiz, that is less than the Dick’s 2011 Black Friday price when you include tax and I didn’t even have to leave the house and I got a brass cased ammo!
There are ammo search engines, but I have not found them to give me the absolute best deal, more of a place to check pricing to see if what you are after is a good deal. You can decide for yourself if http://ammoseek.com, http://www.ammoengine.com and http://ammonow.com are worth visiting. You can also find deals from time to time on http://www.fatwallet.com, but you will have to search and scroll.
Bottom line, if you find what you believe is a great deal grab it since it certainly won’t last very long!
