Yesterday I was on my 21st Best Of Show panel at a homebrewing competition according to my BJCP record. I’ve forgotten how many BOS tables I have led prior to yesterday, but probably 17 or 18 of the 21. For some reason yesterday one of the stewards decided to be quaint instead of doing what was asked. It’s pretty simple actually, all the judges require is Entry Number, Category, Subcategory, the name of the Subcategory and any special ingredients. Our pull sheet was missing the subcategory name, but quickly pulling out the style guidelines provided the required information.
The person trying to demonstrate their lack of intelligence decided each time they announced the beer they would not speak clearly at first. Then later they decided to not reveal the special ingredients where listed. It was extremely frustrating at the end of the long day and early in the process the limits of my patience had been reached. In hindsight I could have handled it better, but I in no uncertain terms explained he was on my last nerve and was soon going to find life unpleasant. I’m positive my demeanor came off as threatening. That worked for a short while, but soon he was back to making ignorant comments instead of simply doing the job he was put there to do. The next time I am on a BOS panel if this person is involved I will certainly pull them aside prior to the start and remind them of yesterday’s performance and ask if they can function as an intelligent adult. I’m not sure if the person was intoxicated, stupid or a combination of both, but pushing my buttons after a long week followed by a long day is not a recipe for long-term success.
At any rate, if you are on a BOS panel or helping with one remember you must all work together to finish. In the end he straightened up slightly and we got the beers to the table so his presence was no longer required. The judges did a magnificent job in deciding the BOS beers in record time so all is well.
